Birthmark Update

I took Nina to a pediatric opthamologist today at the request of my pediatrician. They want to be sure that her birthmark isn't affecting her eye development or her line of vision. Mom went with me, which was a good thing because I had my hands full with her car seat bucket, diaper bag, bottle cooler, my purse, and my lunch box! The doctor and his staff were wonderful with her. They did a preliminary eye exam, and then dilated her eyes and checked her again. He said that she looks great, everything appears normal. He agrees with the pediatrician and the plastic surgeon that we should take a "wait and see" approach to this and continue to monitor its growth, since it should go away on its own by the time she is around five years old. He says that there may be some residual puckering of the skin in that area though, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. We saw so many other kids at the office with problems much more severe than hers, the whole experience really put things into perspective for me, we are so fortunate that she is healthy. A little girl in the waiting room came up to us and asked what was on her face, to which I replied "it is a birthmark". Nina will have to learn how to answer that question, but I am sure that her Dad will teach her a clever response :)
